Workers Comp & MVA

I have added a page to the Sparks Family Medicine website that addresses MVAs and workers comp. It is available from the home page by clicking “Tips,” and then the first link under “Quick Tips.”

Please be aware that there isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” answer to this problem, (other than all workers comp need to go to their contracted workers comp provider). The providers may want to talk to some long-time patients who have been in MVAs. Dialogue is good. My suggestion is as follows:

  1. Consider the patients relationship with the office. If the patient hasn’t been in for three years, they need be seen elsewhere.
  2. Determine the nature of the injury. Significant injuries still need to be triaged accordingly, (e.g., head injuries should probably go to the ER or at least quick care). CREATE a telephone encounter so their is documentation and document ACCORDINGLY.
  3. When in doubt, PRINT the telephone encounter for the provider so that they can review the SAME DAY.
  4. PROVIDERS: This process will give you the opportunity to be informed of the patient and the possible injury so that you can review and recommend care as possible.

I know these tips sounds ridiculous, but my point is to gather the minimal essential information necessary to provide the best information to patients.
